Moving to California: A Newcomers Guide to the Elusive Hidden Gem of San Luis Obispo

0

Often also known as SLO CAL, San Luis Obispo is one of California’s best-kept secrets. This picturesque town is located on the state’s Central Coast, halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Spanning only 12.93 square miles, it is relaxed and laid back with vibrant people, clean coastal air, breathtaking hilly backdrops, and modern flair. If you are considering moving to San Luis Obispo, here is a guide to the city known as “California’s less traveled.”

Homes and Property

One of the biggest draws of this city is the stunning homes for sale in San Luis Obispo historic districts, and iconic architecture. SLO CAL is home to over 180 historic buildings spread across five districts – Railroad, Mill Street, Old Town, Chinatown, and Downtown. The architectural profile is a mix of commercial and residential properties, ranging from historic mansions to modern condos and townhouses. The median sale price is high at $1.01 million, though prices vary per neighborhood.

Community

SLO CAL is home to just over 20,000 households, and the vibe is very welcoming and family-friendly. But because the city hosts two colleges, there is also a significant student population. Overall, the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. You can enjoy a tranquil suburban lifestyle by moving to Johnson Avenue or Laguna Lake. Downtown SLO is more vibrant and bustling.

Things to Do

True to the Californian spirit, SLO CAL offers a lot to see and explore. Residents enjoy a wide array of outdoor recreation and sports activities and a rich culinary, wine, and entertainment scene. Opened in 1958, the iconic Madonna Inn offers a landmark attraction for the history buffs. There is also a Thursday Night Farmer’s Market, where patrons can enjoy fresh foods; the Mission Plaza, which hosts local events and concerts; and the 70-foot-long Bubblegum Alley, where the scenes are drop-dead gorgeous.

Dining

SLO CAL features miles of coastline and many farms that supply fresh ingredients to the area’s eateries and restaurants. In fact, many spots in the city serve farm-to-table delicacies spanning different cuisines. Novo Restaurant is the place to go for vintage wines, craft cocktails, and delicious global dishes. Giuseppe’s Restaurant serves Italian fare from the Pugliese region, with La Locanda going more classic Italian. Firestone Grill, meanwhile, serves the best barbeque this side of the Coast.

Schools

SLO CAL is home to two higher learning institutions, including one of the country’s most acclaimed engineering schools, California Polytechnic State University. The Unified School District also features multiple highly rated elementary and secondary schools.

Commute

The SLO Transit offers extensive public transportation in SLO CAL, allowing residents to traverse the city and surrounding areas. You can also travel to surrounding and other major cities through the Greyhound and Amtrak and even further through the San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport.
